Touching Ground Gallery has gone both underground and into virtual space simultaneously. "The limits and challenges of maintaining the gallery so far from home got to be too much." says gallery director Cyd Smillie. For now the artists are showing in new galleries including the Anchor Gallery in Chicago Illinois where Susan Barton is the director.
Cyd Smillie is creating pop-up galleries in the 45th ward of Chicago featuring local art and artists who have a commitment to helping, healing and re-vitalizing.
"Art has the power to bring people out of their homes or out of their shells. When we paint colorful murals on boarded up storefronts people feel safer and happier; they start to walk from store to store again; and see their neighbors again, and get involved again. That's our goal: beauty, happiness, commitment...not bad , eh?"
"Artists are a great gift to society, they work tirelessly, usually with no guarantee of any material compensation, and all they want is to change the world for the better; put a smile on someone's face, remind a heart of the feelings of comfort and joy, excite the mind with new images and ideas...as a society we need to align with that creative energy and move the mountains of discouragement and apathy.
Touching Ground Gallery was a stepping stone to launching a bigger plan. We hope to show painters painting, sculptures sculpting, dancers dancing and songs being sung.
Touching Ground Gallery is not gone we're just morphing into the future. Thank you for your interest and support."
